Radio tunes and dreams of joining the band.  We put together this time capsule to capture the pastimes of dreaming while listening to tunes and staring out the window.

This Swatch comes in a reusable tin lunchbox filled with miniature toys and candy.
You will receive a set of record shaped playing cards, a pair of musical note shoelaces, a replacement checkered plastic band to fit your Swatch for when you are ready to change the look a little, and a variety of candy, and school supply trinkets to take you back to a carefree time and place.

Swatch watches are so consistently ahead of their time that they could be oracles.  The Variation featured a blue-focused colorway long before blue was hot, and an electronic alarm melody composed by avantgarde composer Philip Glass.  The large / full-size (34mm x 39mm) deep navy case appears almost black in contrast to the brilliant blue band and dial that combines azure, ivory, and gold.  The result is a watch, while from the past, that pays tribute to the future.

PHILIP GLASS

American composer Philip Glass is known as the great minimalist. One of the most dominant musical influences of the late 20th century, the invention of his musical style is compacted sound, so that every note, pause, and moment in time is a fluid gesture with purpose and meaning. For Glass, independence meant the ability to control his time and his decision to guard this freedom allowed him to be the great composer he is today.

SWATCH MUSICALL

The MusiCall series of watches was Swatch’s introduction of the alarm watch.  The series ran from 1993-1998.  The great collaborator, Swatch drew on the success of its early alliances with visual artists including Kiki Picasso and Keith Haring, and tackled an ambitious project that invited sound as art to the watch world.  Jean-Michel Jarre, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Paulo Mundoca, Candy Dulfer, and Nam June Paik each composed melodies for this series.

SWATCH THE WORLD

When Swatch launched in 1983, the Swiss watch industry was in crisis, low cost overseas models had come to dominate the market.  Swatch, under the direction of Nicolas Hayek, transformed the watch to a statement of artistic expression.  Using the latest quartz technology and utilizing lower-cost manufacturing, the strategy took the market by storm and in a new direction. Suddenly, watches were no longer precious items that were carefully considered investments, but the hottest accessory where there was a frenzy to acquire every edition.  It was Swatch that opened the door for what is now called the “Fashion Watch”.
